My first voice.
The first wind.
The smell of bamboo for the first time.

I didn’t know what to expect, but my
mother pulled me close to her.

The warmth of her body was all I had in the world.

I used to curl up against my mom’s back and sleep beside her.

But one morning, my mom watched me from a little distance away. Her eyes seemed to say, "Come here."

I fell, fell, fell.
I fell, and fell, and still got up…

When I finally reached her fur, it felt warmer than usual.

The warmth of having arrived there “on my own feet” for the first time.
That was my first small step.

One day, while my mom was not looking, I went deep into the forest. I heard insects and the wind, and saw flowers I had never seen before. My heart beat fast with excitement.

But when night came, I realized something. A place without my mom’s scent felt a little lonely.

I’m still wavering between freedom and warmth.

The zookeeper took me in his arms and
slowly pulled me away from my mom.

Even when I cried out, I could not go back. My chest felt tight, and I could not stop crying, no matter how hard I struggled.

At the very end, Mom said, "It will be all right. You will become strong."

The new place was quiet, spacious, and a little lonely.

The keepers were kind, but they didn’t
snuggle up to me quietly like my mom did.

Then one day, a slightly smaller guy with round eyes appeared in front of me.

I heard that his name was Yu. I slowly approached him and touched his nose with mine. Yu happily wagged his tail and sat down beside me.

That was my first friend.
I knew then that although there were no words, there was something that could be conveyed.

Yu was so energetic that he invited me to play with him every day.

He would climb tall trees and call, "Over here!" Then he would roll in the mud and laugh.

But one day, Yu hurt his leg. He looked so sad that it was hard to believe he had been so lively.

I just sat beside him and gently leaned against him.

I could not say it aloud, but I thought, "It will be all right."

When Yu stopped crying, I felt a little warmth deep in my chest.

I heard that Yu had been moved to another facility. It had happened so suddenly.

We had been laughing together just the day before. I had not even said, "See you again."

I knew it was no one’s fault. But I felt empty inside and could not eat anything all day.

Before I knew it, he was no longer beside me. I had never known how quiet and lonely that could feel.

Every time I turned over in my sleep,
the realization that there was no one next to me touched my heart.

I wondered if I would see him again.
I repeated these words and closed my eyes.

When I was little, going to sleep was simple.

Now,
I can’t sleep because I remember so many things.

Growing up may mean
living with loneliness.

I may never see Yu again.
That’s what I thought.

But one day, a new friend arrived.
He was small, shy, and scared of me.

It was like watching my old self.

Now it was my turn to be there for him.
Little by little, I conveyed a kindness that words cannot convey.

I did not need to hold his paw or lean against him. I could simply stay beside him.

It did not have to be a reunion. On some nights, knowing that I could care about someone again was enough to comfort me.

After laughing, I suddenly realized something.

"Someone is watching and learning from me."

The way I walked and the way I ate could become examples for someone else.

I am not just a student anymore.

My back became a little straighter.
I felt like I belonged.

For the first time, I realized that I had a role to play.

The voices of the keepers became a little more cautious.

"We need to think about breeding," they said. I pretended not to understand.

But somehow, I could feel what their words meant.

Would I keep living here, or start a family in a new place?

I could feel that I was being asked to make that choice.

No one could tell me which choice was right. But whichever I chose, it would still be my life.

I wanted to face the day of the move with hope. So today, once again, I quietly chewed bamboo beside my friend.

It was a night when the sound of rain seemed gentler than usual.

The keeper said that I would be moving to a new facility.

I could not sleep. As I looked up at the sky, I thought I heard Yu’s voice in the wind.

"It is all right. We are still connected."

When I closed my eyes, familiar scents and laughter came back to me. I remembered all the nights I had spent with someone beside me.

Those memories gently encouraged me to move forward.

The truck door opened. Everything looked different in the place where I stepped out.

The color of the sky, the smell of the wind, and the voices of birds I had never heard before.

I was in a strange world.

I was surrounded by unfamiliar pandas.
They glanced at me and sleepily chewed bamboo again.

"I will be all right here, too," I told myself. My first step felt steadier than I had expected.

A new place can be full of both worry and hope.

Every day, children came to see me. They looked at me with wide eyes and cried, "So cute!"

I just
eat bamboo and lie around.

Yet the sight of me made someone smile.

It was strange.
But I was getting happier and happier.

By being me,
someone’s daily life becomes a little bit kinder.

I began to think that making someone happy simply by being myself was part of living, too.

Today, too, I am lying down with all my might.

[Episode 15|14 Years Old──Nostalgia Riding on the Wind]

Suddenly, a familiar scent brushed past my nose.

It was the air of that day: the smell of earth after rain, the rustle of bamboo leaves, and the warmth of Yu’s fur when I pressed my face against it.

I felt as if time had gone back for a moment.

My friends were no longer here. I could not hear their voices or see them, but they were still alive inside me.

I thought I heard the wind ask, "How are you?" I gently closed my eyes.

Maybe memories are not always things we struggle to keep. Sometimes, they simply come back to us like this.

The keeper said, "Spring is almost here."

Something is slowly sprouting inside me.

I played less wildly than when I was young. Instead, I could close my eyes and enjoy the present moment.

It was as if a quiet lake had formed deep inside me. Every day, a little happiness fell into it.

For example,
the gentle voice of the keeper.
The softness of newly sprouted bamboo grass.
The sound of rain on a sleepy afternoon.

It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, but
the calm “happiness” is right here.

She did not speak, but she was there beside me every day.

If our eyes meet, she turns away from me, but for some reason, when it’s time to eat, she’s always nearby.

We did not play together or sleep side by side. But maybe this was what it meant to be companions.

One quiet afternoon, we chewed bamboo together and glanced at each other from time to time.

That was enough for me.

I thought that sharing silence with someone could feel very safe.

We were connected by the feeling between us, without words.

That, too, was an important way to be close to someone.

I have been dreaming a lot lately.

The mountain paths of my childhood,
my mother’s back,
the ticklish sound of bamboo leaves.

But strangely enough,
in my dreams, there are also scenes that I don’t know yet.

A sparkling river. A forest full of white flowers. An unfamiliar voice softly calling my name.

I don’t know if they are the past or the future.

But when I wake up, I feel warm in my heart.
I am sure it means that it is not the “end” yet.

That voice in my dream seemed to say, "There are still tomorrows you have not seen."

Today, too, I am slowly sinking into a quiet sleep.

Whenever I nibble on a piece of bamboo,
someone holding a camera gently smiles.

When our eyes met, some people waved gently. Those waves comforted me again and again.

"I came to see you again today." "Thank you for being here."

I thought I heard such voices.

I did not need loud applause or a fancy meal.

Just knowing that someone was watching over me made my heart feel warm.

As I get older, my body slows down…

but I feel that my heart has become much more
gentle and strong than it was back then.

It was another morning with the scent of bamboo.

The keeper’s footsteps sounded a little lively. I could hear children laughing in the distance.

I slowly closed my eyes and
remembered.

The day I walked for the first time.
The warmth of my mother’s body.
The first taste of bamboo grass.

And then…
the many glances you gave me, and
the gentle “good morning” and “see you tomorrow”.

I am happy now.

I did not need to cry with joy.

A little warmth in my heart is enough.

To be born, to live, and to be loved.

Today, at nineteen years and three hundred and sixty-five days old, I had lived my life to the very end.
